Deploying five STAX Engineering emissions-capture barges at Sohar Port to cut vessel-at-berth air pollution, protect the communities nearest the industrial corridor, and advance Oman Vision 2040.
Ships docked at berth keep their auxiliary engines running to power onboard systems — generators, lighting, refrigeration, cargo handling — which means their exhaust stacks keep emitting nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulphur oxides (SOx), and particulate matter for as long as they're in port. This project proposes deploying five STAX Engineering emissions-capture barges at Sohar Port to intercept and treat that exhaust before it reaches the surrounding air, without requiring any modification to the vessels themselves (STAX Engineering, 2025a).
